Greenville County has a population of approximately 450,000. Greenville Forward’s 2008 health assessment study reported that 40% have less than $25,000/year annual income, 72% currently work or have someone in household who works, 67% have not had insurance for over one year, 43% of single parents do not have insurance. According to the 2010 Health System Profile for Greenville County, published as part of the System Orientation process of AccessHealth SC, an estimated 117,578 (27%) of Greenville County’s residents lack health insurance during any part of a calendar year.
In addition, DHEC-tracked trends in death rates in Greenville County over the last two decades indicate increasing rates of heart disease and diabetes-related deaths, higher than both the U.S. rates and peer county rates.
AccessHealth Greenville County is a network created as the result of a collaborative partnership between Safety Net Providers, Community Partners, and funding from The Duke Endowment. The aim of the network is to connect low income uninsured residents of Greenville County to a medical home. The common vision shared by AccessHealth SC and networks is to develop and sustain a coordinated system-wide network that results in better health outcomes and increased access to safe, timely, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered care for low-income uninsured residents.
The Goals of AccessHealth Greenville County is to:
- Change how participants access and utilize the healthcare system
- Improve health outcomes in our low-income uninsured population
- Improve health quality of life for program participants
- Reduce the cost of care
