Tidelands Health Offers Employees At-Work Serenity Rooms

Tidelands Health has established serenity rooms at each of their hospitals, Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital and Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital, to support employees’ mental and emotional wellbeing. At-work serenity rooms can lower a company's healthcare costs by reducing chronic stress, which is a major risk factor for illness.

In 2014, the Tidelands Health Wellness Department partnered with their shared governance committee to present the idea of offering at-work serenity spaces to their leadership. With support from Tidelands Health leadership and resources made available by the Tidelands Health Foundation, the Wellness Department found small spaces at each hospital that could be repurposed as serenity rooms. Three years later the rooms are active and regularly used.

Each room is equipped with comfortable seating and dim lighting and they are accessible 24 hours a day seven days a week. Employees frequently use this space and their positive feedback encourages this initiative. Serenity rooms offer the following amenities:

  • Herbal teas,
  • Journaling tools,
  • Soft music,
  • Aromatherapy,
  • Coloring resources and
  • Meditation resources.
By setting aside a little time every day to visit the serenity room, Tidelands Health employees can improve morale, mental focus, and a sense of wellbeing. This can reduce the number of sick days and workplace injuries as well as increase productivity.
