The Regional Medical Center Receives Gold Apple and Gold Star

The Regional Medical Center (RMC) was recognized by the South Carolina Hospital Association’s (SCHA) Working Well initiative and Prevention Partners for achieving the Gold Apple and Gold Star awards. The Gold Apple is awarded for providing and promoting healthy, affordable and delicious food and beverage options for employees and represents the highest standard of nutrition excellence at the workplace. The Gold Star is awarded for achieving the highest standard of tobacco-free excellence by creating a tobacco-free workplace and providing high-quality tobacco cessation programs for employees.
In order to receive the Gold Apple recognition, RMC provides access to healthy options that are determined by sound nutrition criteria, prices healthy options competitively to motivate purchases, markets healthy food and beverages with icons or other easy-to-read labels, and provides benefits such as nutrition counseling and education to support employees in their health improvement efforts. These are among several evidence-based components recommended by Working Well and Prevention Partners for a healthy food environment at the workplace. RMC sets a high bar in terms of their healthy food and beverage options for employees. They provide their employees every opportunity to make a healthy choice in their food venues,” says Kara Van de Grift, Organizational Coaching Manager at Prevention Partners. “I applaud their commitment.”
In order to receive the Gold Star recognition, RMC has a tobacco-free worksite policy, refers its employees to effective quit programs and counseling, provides comprehensive cessation benefits (nicotine replacement therapy and prescription medications) and offers incentives to encourage employees to quit tobacco. These are among several evidence-based components recommended by Working Well and Prevention Partners for comprehensive quit-tobacco systems at worksites. RMC sets a high bar in terms of their cessation program for employees. Employees are provided every opportunity to be successful in quitting the use of tobacco, and all employees are protected from exposure to secondhand smoke at the workplace,” Van de Grift adds, “I applaud their great effort.”

Prevention Partners works with the SC Hospital Association’s Working Well Initiative to engage corporate leaders and staff throughout SC to enhance and sustain employee wellness efforts. These efforts are generously funded through the Duke Endowment.
