Self Regional Healthcare Receives Gold Medal Award

GREENWOOD, SC – Self Regional Healthcare was recognized by the South Carolina Hospital Association’s (SCHA) Working Well initiative and Prevention Partners for achieving the Gold Medal award. The Gold Medal is awarded for providing and promoting access to physical activity opportunities for employees during work hours and represents the highest standard of physical activity excellence at the workplace.

Self Regional Healthcare has a policy allowing paid break time and flexible hours for employees to be physically active at work. They also provide access to exercise facilities at or near the worksite, education and communication with employees about the importance of physical activity, and motivation to engage in physical activity in addition to benefits and incentives to encourage activity such as gym discounts. These are among several evidence-based components recommended by Working Well and Prevention Partners to become a physically active worksite.

“Self Regional Healthcare sets a high bar in terms of their physical activity opportunities for employees. They provide their employees every opportunity to be active during work hours to improve productivity and overall health,” said Lindsey Bickers Bock, Strategic Coaching Senior Manager at Prevention Partners. “I applaud their commitment.”

Self Regional Healthcare CEO Jim Pfeiffer said, “Encouraging a healthy and active environment for Self Regional team members is a recurring goal year after year. We have a mission to promote healthier lifestyles for not only our patients but our own team members as well. We are all very proud hearing the news of this recognition and would like to thank Working Well and Prevention Partners for recognizing our workplace with this award.”

Prevention Partners works with the SCHA’s Working Well initiative to engage corporate leaders and staff throughout SC to enhance and sustain employee wellness efforts. These efforts are generously funded through the Duke Endowment.

“It's exciting to see Self Regional Healthcare taking the role of community health leader and leading by example. Their team exudes passion and commitment as evidenced by their work to not only meet but exceed the Gold Medal standards," said Jen Wright, Working Well Program Director at the SC Hospital Association. "We look forward to our continued collaboration in pursuit of improving population health in SC."

About Self Regional Healthcare:

Self Regional Healthcare began as Self Memorial Hospital in 1951 and was built to be one of the most advanced hospitals in the country. Local business leader and philanthropist James C. Self personally oversaw the construction and recruited top physicians from across the country.

Mr. Self’s commitment to advanced care with leading-edge technology continues today. The difference is that we’ve grown into a major referral and medical center that provides advanced healthcare services to a population of more than a quarter of a million people.

At one time or another, everyone in the surrounding seven counties has been touched by Self. From a broken arm, to the birth of a child or chemotherapy, Self was always there. To separate Self from the community would be impossible. Community is a huge part of what we are, which explains the great sense of pride we feel when people say “I am Self.”

About Working Well:

Working Well is a statewide strategy to improve workplace wellness policies, systems, and environments around tobacco cessation, healthy nutrition, and increased physical activity so the healthy choice is the easy choice for employees across South Carolina.
