2016 Cooking Well Invitational
The Cooking Well Invitational is back and registration is open for competing teams! The Cooking Well Invitational was born from the SC Hospital Association’s Working Well initiative, a statewide strategy to improve workplace wellness policies, systems and environments around tobacco cessation, healthy nutrition and increased physical activity so the healthy choice is the easy choice for employees across South Carolina. Each year organizations that have achieved Working Well’s Gold Apple award are invited to compete in the Cooking Well Invitational to create a delicious, affordable and healthy meal that can be recreated in a hospital or worksite setting.
In order to achieve the Gold Apple, organizations must provide access to healthy options that meet sound nutrition criteria; price healthy options competitively to motivate purchases; market healthy food and beverages with icons or other easy-to-read labels; and provide benefits such as nutrition counseling and education to support employees in their health improvement efforts. Now in its fourth year, this interactive competition will celebrate the success of South Carolina employers and their food service staff in creating good food that's good for their employees and visitors. The following teams with the Gold Apple recognition have registered to compete in the event. Team registration is open until August 1.
• Baptist Easley Hospital
• Beaufort Memorial Hospital
• GHS Laurens County Memorial Hospital
• Medical University of South Carolina
• Palmetto Health
• Regional Medical Center
• Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital
For the second year in a row, the culinary competition will be held as part of the “Taste of Charleston” event. This year’s competition will be held on Sunday, Sept. 25 at historic Boone Hall Plantation, which will be transformed into a sea of culinary enchantment. Fifty of the Low Country’s favorite casual and fine dining restaurants will be serving sample-size portions with more than 10,000 people expected to attend the event.
This year we are excited to host the Iron Chef event at the newly renovated Charleston Gaillard Center on Friday, Sept. 23. The event will showcase an iron chef-style competition between two teams, each consisting of one restaurant chef and one hospital chef. The teams will battle each other to see who can produce the best dishes that incorporate the secret ingredient.
Keep a lookout for an announcement in next month’s Working Well eNews with an updated list of competing teams. To view the competitor’s brochure or register your team, visit the SCHA calendar.
