Tommy Cockrell named South Carolina Healthcare Resources president

South Carolina Hospital Association President Thornton Kirby has announced that Tommy Cockrell is the new president and CEO of South Carolina Healthcare Resources, Inc. (SCHR), effective July 1st.

SCHR is the wholly owned, for-profit subsidiary of SCHA.  In this role, Cockrell will be responsible for marketing the services of SCHR to member hospitals and evaluating and developing new business opportunities for the organization.  SCHR's primary product lines to date have been workforce services, group purchasing services through MedAssets, and the medical waste management and treatment program.  Since its inception in late 1992, SCHR has generated more than $5 million in non-dues revenue to SCHA and provided more than $500,000 toward the debt service of SCHA's new headquarters building.

Cockrell joined the SCHA staff in 1992 and since that time has held several positions with both SCHA and SCHR. Most recently he has served as chief operating officer and vice president of SCHR and senior vice president and chief operating officer of SCHA.  While his duties include marketing SCHR products and services to SCHA members, both the SCHA and the SCHR Boards have recommended an increased emphasis on developing and expanding SCHR services. In response, Kirby has asked Cockrell to take on this new and much expanded role with SCHR.

"Tommy knows our members and understands what they need to provide services as efficiently and safely as possible.  He has nearly four decades of experience working in a hospital and with the association in a number of executive capacities, and he is always willing to take on new roles and new responsibilities to better serve South Carolina hospitals. I am confident that his increased involvement with SCHR on a day-to-day basis will make it a stronger player in our state's health care delivery system as our members work to transform health and health care in South Carolina," Kirby said.

Prior to joining SCHA, Cockrell was employed at Kershaw Health for more than 21 years in a number of positions, the most recent being chief financial officer.  He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in accounting and business from the University of South Carolina (USC) and Webster University, and serves as adjunct faculty in hospital finance at both USC and Webster.
