Self Regional Healthcare receives Gold Star status

Congratulations to Self Regional Healthcare for being the third hospital in South Carolina to earn the Gold Star for enhancing their efforts to help employees quit the use of tobacco.

Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood, SC has been recognized by the South Carolina Hospital Association and NC Prevention Partners for providing the highest standard of excellence for the tobacco cessation programs offered to their employees. Hospitals receiving this acknowledgment are considered Gold Star Hospitals as a part of the Working Well initiative. Funded by The Duke Endowment, managed by the South Carolina Hospital Association, and informed by NC Prevention Partners’ success in developing infrastructure for effective worksite wellness programs in North Carolina, Working Well is an effort to improve the health of hospital employees across the state of South Carolina by establishing worksite wellness culture where the healthy choice is the easy choice.

In order to receive this recognition, Self Regional Healthcare addressed several components of an effective quit tobacco system that are recommended by NC Prevention Partners.  "I was so impressed with the incredible commitment by hospital leaders at Self Regional Healthcare. They clearly have the highest commitment to fully helping and supporting their employees to quit the use of tobacco. They are community wellness leaders. I commend and congratulate for a job well done." Melva Fager Okun DrPH, Senior Program Manager, NC Prevention Partners.

Self Regional Healthcare employees who are interested in quitting can participate in a free comprehensive cessation program that provides not only education toits staff, but also FDA approved Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT). Self Regional Healthcare also has best practice, strategically placed tobacco-free signage that supports and aligns with their tobacco-free campus policy along with an effective enforcement system. Self Regional Healthcare received the Gold Star recognition in the first year of Working Well implementation, and joins only two other SC hospitals in this prestigious ranking.  "Self Regional Healthcare strives to be a champion of healthier lifestyles in the communities we serve. We also recognize tobacco use as a major detriment to good health. So we at Self Regional are very proud of our tobacco cessation efforts," said James Pfeiffer, President and CEO of Self Regional Healthcare.

Pfeiffer goes on to add, "A number of years back we initiated a tobacco free campus policy. Self Regional also has systems in place to identify tobacco use among team members. Currently 150 of the 220 Self team members who reported they used tobacco have worked with one of our Self Cares health coaches to become tobacco-free. In short, we just want to help lead our patients, citizens and team members to enjoy healthier lives."

Baptist Easley and Laurens County Health Care System are the two other South Carolina hospitals with this ranking.
