SCHA "White Coat Day" at the Statehouse

The South Carolina Statehouse was overrun with physicians last Tuesday as they descended on Columbia to advocate for Medicaid expansion to the General Assembly. Before heading to the lobby, more than 80 physicians from hospitals across the state met in the Blatt Building to hear from Rep. Kris Crawford, MD (R-Florence), a physcician and legislative health care champion. Rep. Crawford spoke candidly to his physician colleagues about the ACA and how politics in SC overwhelms policy, especially in health care.

After hearing from Dr. Crawford, the group walked over to the Statehouse and was introduced in the balconies of both Senate and House. The remainder of the afternoon was spent calling on individual legislators. Members of the House and Senate were noticeably impressed with the strong show of support for Medicaid expansion from the physician community. Thanks to Dr. Crawford and special thanks to the hospital physicians who took time out of their busy day to participate in this major Advocacy Campaign effort. Hospitals represented include, MUSC, Chester Regional Medical Center, East Cooper Medical Center, Roper St. Francis Healthcare, Palmetto Health, Providence Hospital, The Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg, Trident Medical Center, Shriner's Hospital of Greenville and the Children's Hospital Collaborative.

This is the first in a series of Advocacy Days organized by SCHA to encourage hospital employees to come to Columbia and tell their State Representative and Senator that South Carolina's hospitals fully support Medicaid expansion. Please be on the lookout for future events at the Statehouse, and be ready to answer the call when we need you. Legislators must hear from the hospital employees that are on the front lines working to deliver high-quality healthcare to the people of South Carolina.
