SCHA President & CEO Supports Working Well

The South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA) has teamed up with NC Prevention Partners (NCPP) to support South Carolina hospitals in their efforts to develop and integrate wellness policies into worksite environments. Effective implementation will promote better health through three pillars of wellness: tobacco-free people and places, a healthy food environment, and increased physical activity throughout the work day. “During a time when hospitals are cutting costs, Working Well will help our hospitals find significant cost savings through benefit restructuring for healthy employees, decreasing the cost of healthy food, and encouraging physical activity throughout the work day. As hospital employees embrace these policy changes to improve environmental wellness, we expect to see the healthcare costs associated with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer begin to decline,”  according to Thornton Kirby, SCHA President and CEO.

This worksite wellness initiative is known as Working Well. Funded by The Duke Endowment , Working Well is partnering closely with NCPP, which is supporting our efforts and planning to share its expertise with SC hospitals. Through the use of the WorkHealthy America assessment tool and discussion of challenges and triumphs in both NC and SC healthcare facilities, the two will share best practices.

“By making the healthy choice the easy choice, our members’ employees will be surrounded by an environment that promotes and supports healthy living,” Kirby said.

Kirby supports Working Well and believes in its value to SC hospitals and their employees. “This initiative will support our member hospitals in their fight against rising employee health costs. Integrating Working Well into our member hospitals’ benefit structures can produce a decrease in expenditures, positively affecting their bottom line all-the-while creating a healthy workforce."
