SCHA Employees Participate in Wellness Challenge

Throughout the year, Work to Be Fit—the South Carolina Hospital Association’s employee wellness program—offers wellness challenges to encourage employees to lead healthier lives. This spring, SCHA employees participated in “Spring Into Fitness,” an eight-week team-based challenge designed to encourage participants to get and stay active.

The overall goal for each team was to walk the distance of the Palmetto Trail which is 425 miles long. The Palmetto Trail runs from the South Carolina coast to the mountains of the upstate through forests, beside lakes, across mountain ridges, into towns, and even across Revolutionary battlefields.

With approximately five members per team, that meant a weekly goal of approximately 11 miles per week for each participant. Participants gained miles through personal activities and through group activities hosted by Work to Be Fit. These activities included participating in National Walk at Lunch Day, a disc golf class, a yoga class, and a hike in the Harbison State Forest. The participating teams were very successful with some teams “walking” the distance of the Palmetto Trail twice or more. The seven teams walked a total of 6,483 miles—what a great way to “Spring into Fitness”!
