SC health officials prepare for possible fall flu pandemic

Is South Carolina prepared for a flu pandemic this fall? Health officials are working on getting everyone ready.

A statewide health summit was held Wednesday in Columbia at SCHA to remind everyone that preparations, in the workplace and personally for a possible flu are necessary.

"If we have a severe pandemic lasting a year or so, then South Carolina could experience again an overwhelming surge on our medical and healthcare facilities resulting in up to 17,000 hospitalizations," said Dr. Robert Ball with the Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The South Carolina Pandemic Influenza Ethics Task Force released a draft report at the state summit that looks at how to treat a significant number of people when resources are scarce.
