SC DHEC Welcomes New Infection Preventionist
Lisa R. Smith, RN, BSN, CIC is getting comfortable in her new office at the SC DHEC headquarters in Columbia, SC. As the most recent addition to the SC DHEC staff, Smith will serve as the Infection Prevention (IP) Program Manager. She will be responsible for implementing the DHEC HIDA NHSN data validation program, will provide consultation to infection preventionists regarding NHSN use for mandatory reporting and will provide infection prevention and control consultation to DHEC and other health care facilities for hospital-acquire infection outbreaks. In addition, Smith will be working closely with SCHA on the SCHAIP, CAUTI and STOP BSI initiatives.

I am very pleased to announce that Lisa Smith joined the HAI Section of the Division of Acute Disease Epidemiology on May 18, 2011. She brings with her extensive experience in infection control and nursing.
Ms. Smith earned her Bachelor’s Degree in nursing from the University of South Carolina in 1994. She worked as a clinical nurse for Presbyterian Health Services for a year after graduation, and then worked at the Carolina’s HealthCare System as both a clinical nurse and a nurse manager.
From 1997 to 2011, Ms Smith worked as an Infection Preventionist at both Carolinas HealthCare System and Piedmont Medical Center. Ms Smith is certified in infection control and has a broad knowledge of NHSN and its uses. She has had extensive involvement with APIC, and even served as President of APIC NC from 2005-2008.
We are very excited to have Lisa Smith join us in this critical role on DHEC’s HAI prevention team.
