Sam Wyche to Speak at TAP

Famed NFL Coach and Heart Transplant Recipient Sam Wyche to Speak at SCHA-SCMA TAP Conference

Sam Wyche, a former NFL coach and sports analyst, will be our initial guest speaker to kick off our SCHA Trustee, Administrator, and Physician (TAP) Conference on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. The annual conference will be held at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort and Spa.

Coach Wyche was considered one of the most innovative coaches in the NFL as well as a master of motivational techniques. The inspiration he provided was the key to one of the biggest turnarounds in NFL history when the Cincinnati Bengals went from 4-11 in 1987 to the Super Bowl the next year. Sam Wyche was head coach of the Bengals for eight years, followed by four years at the helm of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In 1996, he was a sports analyst with Marv Albert on a weekly NFL game for NBC. In 1997, he joined Joe Gibbs, Cris Collinsworth, Ahmad Rashad and Greg Gumbel on NBC’s weekly pre-game and half-time shows. When NBC lost the contract for NFL games to CBS, Sam then partnered with Kevin Harlan on weekly NFL games on that network.

In September of 2016, Sam was admitted to the Carolina Medical Center's Dickson Heart Unit in Charlotte, North Carolina and diagnosed with congestive heart failure. His condition rapidly deteriorated and his only hope to live was to receive a heart transplant. In the early hours of September 13, 2016, Sam received the “gift of life” as he underwent a successful transplant operation.

Using his 29 years of experience as a player, coach, NFL broadcaster for NBC and CBS, and heart transplant recipient, Sam demonstrates how his "life lessons learned" can also enrich your team's workplace, community and personal life. His inspirational, motivational and humorous presentation is filled with sports stories and positive reinforcement. The objective is to have your “team” leave energized The Wyche Way.

Sam Wyche will be one of 16 transplant recipients riding on the 2018 Donate Life Rose Parade Float, The Gift of Time, in Pasadena on New Year’s Day.  Sam will represent South Carolina as the transplant recipient honoree of Sharing Hope SC and Donate Life SC thanks to a grant from Bridge To Life.

Since 2015, South Carolina hospital CEOs and COOs have had the opportunity at the SCHA TAP Conference to sign special Donate Life Rose Parade Float rose vials in honor of donors from their hospitals. This year, prior to his presentation on Thursday, Sam Wyche will be available for photos with CEOs and COOs as they sign these special vials that will be on the Donate Life Rose Parade Float with Sam on New Year’s Day.

Make plans to be energized The Wyche Way and then sign a Donate Life Rose Parade Float rose vial and have a photo with Sam after his speech at the start of the 2017 Tap Conference in September.  To register for the conference, click here.
