Rick Wheeler Recognized as Distinguished Hospital Trustee

Palmetto Health board of directors member awarded for his service, commitment, and leadership both for his hospital and for the local community.

Rick Wheeler is an intentional guy according to Calvin Elam, former member of the Palmetto Health Board of Trustees. He starts with the end in mind and is purposeful in everything he does. Perhaps it’s the disciplined work ethic from his work in the manufacturing business or maybe his keen sense of humor that has led him to serve as the current chair of the Palmetto Health Board. And likely it’s all of those things combined to form one very effective, very mission-driven leader in Rick Wheeler.

In September, Rick received the 2015 Distinguished Hospital Trustee award at an event hosted by the South Carolina Hospital Association. The award is presented annually to a hospital board member for his or her service, commitment, and leadership both for their hospital and for the local community. Rick is involved in numerous community focused organizations and serves as vice president of M-D Metal Source. He is currently serving his second term as chair of the Palmetto Health Board. In his seven plus years of involvement with Palmetto Health he has served on every standing committee and seen the hospital through tremendous growth and changes.

His colleagues from the Palmetto Health board point to his strong leadership characteristics as a major key to his success. According to Jerry Odom, “Rick Wheeler has integrity in spades. When he says something, you can count on it.”

Lester Branham describes Rick as an inclusive leader who makes you want to be engaged because “this is what we ought to be doing.”

But Sara Fisher summarizes him best by saying, “He makes hard work fun.”

Congratulations to Rick Wheeler, the 2015 Distinguished Hospital Trustee award recipient.
