Progress of Working Well

In January of 2011, the SC Hospital Association received funds from the Duke Endowment to create a worksite wellness initiative, appropriately coined Working Well, with the aim to not only improve employee wellness efforts within the hospitals across the state of South Carolina, but to create sustainability through culture shifts that provide environments supportive of healthy behaviors. As of June 21, 2011, six months after the start of the initiative, 36 South Carolina hospitals have joined Working Well and begun improving and creating sustainable programs that will aim to improve their employees’ health and wellness. Fifteen was the goal for the first 12 months. As you can see, we have surpassed our goal showing the readiness and leadership of our SC hospitals.  We have no intention of slowing down. We feel strongly that healthy hospitals build healthy communities, and create healthy lives.

From a 2009 assessment completed by hospital staff from the SCHA member hospitals across the state, we noticed many hospitals are doing great things in the realm of employee wellness but the health of our state as a whole was not improving. We noticed environments conducive to healthy behaviors supported by policies and systems were factors necessary in creating sustainable, effective outcomes but  were not being addressed in most facilities. Needless to say, we saw the drive of our member hospitals to improve health, and the need to do so.

With our 36 committed hospitals, we are affecting 64,179 South Carolinians in 25 counties across all regions of the state. From the Upstate to the LowCountry and the Midlands to the PeeDee, Working Well is gaining positive attention and multiplying in numbers rapidly. We are so proud of our hospitals that are making employee wellness a priority during a time when hospitals are burdened with budget cuts and funding issues. These hospitals understand the importance of employee wellness and the benefits it will have on their facility, and their community as a whole. The newest facilities to join our list of committed hospitals are Village Hospital, Marion Regional Hospital, and all McLeod Health, Inc facilities including McLeod Regional Medical Center, McLeod Health Darlington, and McLeod Health Dillon. We want to congratulate all facilities on a job-well-done!
