Preston Callison retires
In 1988, he retired as senior partner in the Columbia law firm of Callison, Tighe and Rush after serving for more than 40 years as the legal advisor to the SC Baptist Hospital, the General Board of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, and the South Carolina Hospital Association. He has continued to serve as legislative consultant to the South Carolina Hospital Association, continuing to put his love of South Carolina and his legislative and health care expertise and experience to work for the people of our state.
Pres received a resolution from the SCHA Board of Trustees , which read Whereas, Preston Callison practiced law in Columbia from 1947 to 1988, specializing in property, finance, hospital and institutional law and retired as senior partner in the firm of Callison, Tighe and Robinson;
Whereas, he was the first hospital attorney in the state of South Carolina and remained the state's only hospital attorney for nearly two decades;
Whereas, he was a member of the SC House of Representatives from Lexington County during the 1965-66 and the 1969-70 sessions of the Legislature, serving on the Education and Public Works, 3M, and Ways and Means Committees;
Whereas, he served as SCHA's general counsel for more than 30 years and has been a legislative consultant to the Association for more than 50 years;
Whereas, Preston was named an Honorary Member of the SCHA in 1989;
Whereas, no one has served the hospitals of South Carolina with more dedication than Preston Callison;
Whereas, Dr. Helen Leppard Callison, his wife of 60 years and a dedicated educator, has been and continues to be a valuable partner in his life and career;
Whereas, both Preston and Helen Callison are beloved and respected members of the SCHA family;
Whereas, they are officially retiring to Florida and will spend more time with their five children and seven grandchildren;
Be it therefore resolved, that the Board of Trustees of the South Carolina Hospital Association wishes to express its appreciation and affection to Preston and Helen Callison for their tremendous contributions to our state and its people.
Be it further resolved that Preston and Helen will always be special members of the SCHA family.
Adopted by the South Carolina Hospital Association Board of Trustees this 6th day of November, 2009.
He also received the Order of the Palmetto in recognition of more than six decades of dedicated service to South Carolina and our nation.
