Laurens County Community Care Center, or LC4, at Laurens County Memorial Hospital opened its doors earlier this year.
The partnership between the hospital and Carolina Health Centers provides health services in seven counties of Western South Carolina.
LC4 is adjacent to the hospital’s Emergency wing. The office is in the former ER space, vacated when Laurens County Memorial Hospital (then Laurens County Hospital, prior to an affiliation with Greenville Health System) built its ER wing along with a Women’s Health Center.
“This goes back to something Congressman Duncan and I worked on when we were seat-mates in the (state) General Assembly -- re-use of space, where it’s ‘big-box’ stores on, in this case, in the hospital,” state Rep. Mike Pitts, Laurens County told Go Laurens News.
Others celebrating the collaboration of Carolina Health Centers, a Federally Qualified Health Center, and LCMH were:
--John H. Britt, chairman of the board of directors, Carolina Health Centers Inc.;
--Sue Veer, president and CEO of Carolina Health Centers Inc.;
--Rich D’Alberto, president, Laurens County Memorial Hospital;
--Dr. Angelo Sinopoli, chief medical office and vice-president for clinical integration for Greenville Health System;
--Anthony Keck, director, SC Health and Human Services; and
--Thornton Kirby, president and CEO, SC Hospital Association.
“With government healthcare policies in flux,” said 3rd District Congressman Jeff Duncan, “this facility is a model for the rest of the country. It’s about reducing emergency room visits, but it’s more about creating a health home, providing a doctor who understands (patients).
An innovative health care site that is gaining national attention, LC4 creates a business model advantageous to both sponsoring organizations, and also to patients.
LC4 is a primary care facility open to anyone looking for a medical home, but it is also available as a referral site for patients who over-utilize the hospital’s emergency facility for non-emergency issues.
As a part of the Carolina Health Centers Family of Care, LC4 sees uninsured, under-insured and insured patients, and provides a sliding fee scale for patients who qualify.
