On March 4, 2016, the SCHA Board of Trustees discussed National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) and reviewed the South Carolina Healthcare Decisions Day (SCHDD) Action Guide and Toolkit developed through the SC Coalition for the Care of the Seriously Ill (SCHA is a founding member of the Coalition). The purpose of this Healthcare Decisions Day is to inspire, educate and empower the public and providers about the importance of advance healthcare planning since less than 30 percent of the population has an advance directive such as a Healthcare Power of Attorney or Living Will. National and South Carolina Health Decision Day is April 16 of each year.
The SCHA Board and SCHA Quality Advisory Council both approved the following actions to endorse widespread implementation of the SCHDD Action Guide:
- SCHA member facilities will publically celebrate NHDD/SCHDD by implementing selected activities outlined in the SCHDD Action Guide with their employees, staff, and the public,
- SCHA will seek public co-endorsement of NHDD/SCHDD with the South Carolina Medical Association, and
- SCHA’s celebration of NHDD/SCHDD will include reaching out to our partnering organizations, Personal Membership Groups, agencies, businesses, and the public to urge them to also implement the SCHDD Action Guide. Make sure your organization is listed on the NHDD website as a participating organization or State Liaison. SCHA will use these lists to track participation of our members and other entities in our state; the SCHA Quality Council and SCHA Board of Trustees will receive an update on the progress made in our state. Go to this link for the complete list of participating organizations from across the country. **Please note, there are separate tabs at the bottom of the spread sheet to see the national, state, proprietary organizations and State Liaisons. NHDD and SCHDD are very open and collaborative movements. Organizations and individuals are encouraged to register as participating organizations and State Liaisons here.)
