Experts stress need to understand effect of Affordable Care Act’s provisions

Minority populations need to understand the potential impact of health care reform and use that knowledge to take advantage of the changes in coming years, according to experts who spoke Thursday at the James E. Clyburn Health Disparities Lecture Series.

Dr. Garth Graham, deputy assistant secretary for minority health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, referred to advice from his father when he addressed the audience of researchers and health advocates at the conference in Columbia.

“There are three types of people: those that say they want things to happen, those that make things happen and those that say ‘Wait, what just happened?’” Graham said. “You don’t want to be in that last group.”
