Conway Medical Center President and CEO Philip Clayton Announces Retirement
Conway Medical Center announced today that President and Chief Executive Officer, Philip A. Clayton, will retire effective December 31, 2017 after 37 years of leadership and service to the community. The Conway Medical Center Board of Directors has named Bret Barr, the Medical Center’s current Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice-President, as the new President and CEO effective January 1, 2018.
A native of Myrtle Beach, Clayton graduated from Myrtle Beach High School and received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Clemson University and his master’s degree in health care administration from the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University. Clayton joined Conway Medical Center in 1980 as Controller. He was promoted to CFO in 1983 and in 1988 he was named COO. He was named President and Chief Executive Officer in 1992.
Under Clayton’s leadership, people and communities in Horry and surrounding counties have benefited from Conway Medical Center’s growth from a single hospital to a hospital system with an extensive physician network and numerous community-based services. He has guided the medical center through three major expansions, while maintaining a financially sound organization with over 1,600 employees and a medical staff comprised of more than 200 physicians. Leroy “Boe” Rainbow, Chairman of the CMC Board of Trustees noted, “I have worked with Phil for 20 years and admire and appreciate the leadership and commitment he has shown to this organization, its employees, volunteers and medical staff. He has not only been attentive to the organization, but to the community as well. Bret joined Conway Medical Center in 1998 as Controller and was named Chief Financial Officer in 2001 and Chief Operating Officer in 2016. Our Board has confidence in his leadership and commitment to providing the highest quality healthcare to patients and families in our community as we continue to expand our services.”
