AHA Urges CMS Not To Finalize Proposed Flu Vaccination Cop Rule
The AHA told the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services it is inappropriate to use the Medicare and Medicaid conditions of participation to achieve the public health goal of maximizing flu vaccination rates. CMS proposes to revise the CoPs as early as this fall to require hospitals and certain other facilities to offer all patients, both those admitted to the hospital and those who come to the hospital for any type of ambulatory service, flu vaccination during flu season.
While the association supports efforts to increase flu vaccination, AHA said "doing so in any hospital-based setting in the manner that CMS proposes would be overly complex to implement and not the most cost effective way to accomplish the agency's goal." AHA said the agency vastly underestimates the cost and burden hospitals would face in complying with the proposed rule and called its implementation timeline unrealistic.
