Advocacy Day at SC State House for Healthcare Decisions Day

On April 13th, a large group of healthcare advocates gathered at the SC State House in Columbia to advocate for Healthcare Decisions Week in SC, which incorporates the national NHDD on April 16.  Joining The Carolinas Center were 7 hospice organizations (Agape, Carolina Hospice Care, Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, Lutheran, McLeod, Roper, Tri-County); one “Doctor of the Day” (Dr. Robert Todd, Medical Director at Hospice Care of the Piedmont); one hospital (Roper St. Francis); the SC Bar, SCMA, and SCHA. The pictures below capture some of the excitement as we shared with lobbyists, advocates for other causes, and legislators (note Senator Ross Turner with Marisette Hasan, Cindy Coker and Veronica McMahon) the importance of advance care planning. To paraphrase Dr. Ira Byock, "It’s not because we’re old or sick, but because we care about doing something to guide those who love us in case they need it".

Rep. Todd Atwater from Lexington, SC, representing District 87, recognized Dr. Todd and the work he and all healthcare workers do every day to help those living with advanced illness and wanting to talk about advance care planning.  He spoke about the advocates in the State House lobby (who were now proudly looking on from the chamber balcony) and encouraged all officials to consider and implement an advance directive.
